If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ve heard of the infamous butterbeer drink that is served in the taverns of Hogsmeade. Fans have created many delicious recipes inspired by the books to create this literary cocktail. Typically these recipes call for cream soda and butterscotch schnapps.
One night, we got a hankering for one of these delicious butterbeer cocktails, but didn’t have cream soda on hand. The only soda we really keep in stock is Dr Pepper (courtesy of Ruckus). While it’s not even remotely similar, I decided to see what would happen if I used it instead. I also made an additional alcohol swap of spiced rum instead of regular rum to pair with the nuanced flavor of Dr Pepper. What happened was magic.
This is a lovely variation of butterbeer that I call the Nifler. IYKYK. If you’re not familiar with the wizard world, the nifler is a mole-like creature with an affinity for shiny objects. I thought it was the perfect name for a playful take on a typically golden cocktail. Tag me on Instagram if you make and love this drink!
