DIY Felt Menorah Banner

Are you ready for this tutorial? It’s wild. It’s totally crazy. It’s felt-tastic! Ok, I’m done. But seriously, I love our menorah banner. It’s bright and colorful and fun. It was even more of a labor of love than the dreidels, but I think it’s because I was making it up as I went along. I did all the template designing and math so you don’t have to!

As long as you can cut felt and wield a hot glue gun, it should go together in an afternoon. I think from the time that I printed the templates to the end it took about 2ish hours. But! I’m hoping that it will be a new Hanukkah decoration and tradition for years to come.

The thing that I’m looking forward to most about decorating our felt menorah every night is enjoying a few pieces of chocolate gelt that I’ll place in the pockets with the little plush flames. We’ll still light our family menorah, too, but I love that this one is more hands-on for her. (And fire safe!)

If you make one of these banners, I hope you’ll tag us on Instagram!

Materials

  • Free Printable Felt Menorah Banner Template (Click here to download)
  • Wooden dowel cut to 15”
  • 12” x 18” white felt
  • 1 sheet each yellow, turquoise, light pink, royal blue, and pink craft felt
  • Velcro
  • Straight pins or double sided tape
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Scissors
  • Gold puffy paint or gold permanent vinyl
  • Twine, leather cord, or yarn

Directions

  1. Print out your Free Printable Hanukkah Menorah Banner Template on regular 8.5” x 11” printer paper. Cut out the menorah and the flames. Then, cut off the inner menorah candles along the curve.
  2. Place your menorah and candles onto your felt. You can either use double sided tape or straight pins to keep everything in place.
  3. Cut out 2 2.5” squares for each of the felt colors. (No template is provided for this.)
  4. Next, fold the yellow felt in half and pin/tape the flames. That way you get matching halves for the plush flame. Cut up some of the smaller scraps to stuff the flames later.
  5. Place your squares, menorah, and candles on your white felt. Once you like the placement, start gluing. Just remember to only glue the bottom and the sides of the squares so you don’t accidentally glue your pockets shut!
  6. Once the banner is cool, flip it over and place your dowel in the top center. Fold the felt around the dowel and glue it down.
  7. Cut a length of your twine/leather cord/yarn for the top and tie it to either end of the dowel.
  8. Glue the top half of each flame together. Then fill with a small amount of felt scraps and glue shut.
  9. Cut little pieces of Velcro to fit the backs of the flames. Make sure you glue the fuzzy part of the Velcro on the flame so it doesn’t snag inside the pockets! Then add glue to the spikey part of the Velcro and place the flame at the top of each candle.
  10. Finish off your beautiful new Hanukkah menorah banner by either handwriting numbers 1-8 on the pockets or cutting out gold permanent vinyl numbers.
  11. Don’t forget to add gelt to the pockets with the flames!
